ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Through digital photography, I am interested in capturing visual or emotional contrasting elements that exist in the same space. “after the flood” shows an element of nature, clinging to an industrial “man-made” surface; “continue” is an abstract image that takes a minimalist and highly focused view to the contrast of black and white; “glass river” attempts to convey kinetic movement in a static image whose subject is a solid object; “inter” has flowing, wavy formal elements with sharp, straight, and jagged lines interjecting; “measurements” also explores the high contrast of black and white, solid and liquid, and that of a captured moment of the continual passage of time, as the ice has begun the process of melting into water and, the viewer assumes, will continue that process; finally, “moon” shows a clearly defined border near the top of the image that fades away as the eye moves down the image. Discovering, and sometimes creating, liminal spaces such as these that show contrasting elements working together in visually interesting ways continues to inspire my photographic intent.
Ashna Madni is a writer and artist born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. She is a recent graduate from the University of Southern California with a Bachelor of Arts in English (Creative Writing) and a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences with an Emphasis in Psychology. She received the Dean Joan Metcalf Schaefer Travel Award from USC to study at the University of Cambridge in the Pembroke-King’s Programme during the summer of 2016. Ashna has been published in Palaver Arts Magazine and will be published in California’s Emerging Writers by Z Publishing House and Semantics Magazine. Ashna has also trained in classical and contemporary ballet since the age of four and just completed her term as Co-Director of the Chamber Ballet Company of USC.
